Kylie and Brooks' Gymnastics Birthday Party!!!

On Sunday, November 22nd, we celebrated Kylie and Brooks' birthdays at Wendy's Gymnastics with a fun and very active birthday party! We had a Frozen theme for Kylie and the girls, and a Cars theme for Brooks and the boys! We had 15 little friends out to play, run, and tumble at one of Kylie and Brooks' favorite places. After an hour of playing, we sat down for some pizza and cake! I'm not sure how much longer these two are going to let me get away with giving them a combined birthday party, but I'm going to keep at it for as long as they will let me! We all had a blast!

Happy 5th Birthday, Kylie Bean!

Happy Birthday to this sweet girl!

Kylie has the kindest, sweetest heart. It really is all rainbows and butterflies with her. Most days are "the best day ever" and she often dreams about "riding 100 unicorns." She says things like, "I love you no matter what," and "I want to snuggle with you forever." She constantly melts my heart with her sweetness. I pray that she always keeps her optimistic and hopeful spirit. She makes us happier that we ever dreamed possible.

Every year on Kylie's birthday, we reflect on her birth story. Her arrival was so surprising and scary, and we are so blessed that she is so healthy and thriving today. It's hard to believe she started out so small!

I asked Kylie about her favorite things again this year. These are the same questions I have asked her on the previous two birthdays. Here are her answers:

Favorite color: pink and purple
Favorite animal: unicorn
Favorite TV show: "Shimmer and Shine"
Favorite movie: "Frozen" and "Tinker Bell"
Favorite food: grapes and carrots
Favorite drink: apple juice
Favorite toy: American Girl Doll
Favorite lunch: PB and Nutella sandwich
Favorite outfit: comfy dress with gray leggings
Favorite snack: s'more mix (chocolate chips, marshmallows, and golden grahams)
Favorite song: "Wagon Wheel"
Favorite book: any princess book
Best friends: Annie, Claire, Addison, Abby, Carly, and Emma
Favorite holiday: 4th of July and Valentine's Day
Favorite thing to do outside: Ride bikes and scooters
Favorite thing to do at school: Play with friends
Favorite thing to take to bed with you: Bunny
What do you want to be when you grow up? Ice Skater
What did you eat for dinner on your birthday? Cheese pizza

A few other things she likes to do...Go running, reading books, doing puzzles, playing games, making crafts, coloring, writing/copying words and letters, eating chocolate, swimming, gymnastics, taking baths, helping with basic chores (setting the table and sweeping) and having play dates with her friends!

There are a few things that she dislikes...Being left alone anywhere (bedroom, car, etc...), watermelon, wearing jeans that are too loose, carbonated beverages, picking up her toys, and saying good bye to visitors.

As far as her milestones over the past year, most of her gains have come cognitively. She knows all the letters and letter sounds, and I think is ready to start reading. I haven't really worked with her on it, but I am hoping to start soon. She writes several words (from memorization) including her entire name, Brooks, mom, dad, cat, bat, boo, zoo, cow, and maybe a few more. She can count to 100, and do some basic addition. She can draw basic people, animals, flowers, and picture scenes.

I have noticed a couple of developments in her gross motor skills as well. She can hop on both feet without holding on to anything, and can skip with her left side, but is still working on the right. She loves running, and has decent form. She can kick a ball, and throw a ball into a target. She enjoys sports, especially the two she is currently involved in, gymnastics and swimming. In gymnastics, she can do a forward roll, handstand on the wall, and a basic cartwheel. In swimming, she can front crawl the width of the pool, float on her front and her back, and glide underwater the width of the pool. She just moved up from the beginner level to the glider level in swimming.

Kylie is still a great sleeper and eater. She sleeps from about 8pm-8am, but she no longer naps. She did stop sucking her thumb last winter. It was much easier to get her to stop than I thought it was going to be, but with the lack of thumb sucking came the lack of napping! Oh well! She now does quiet time from about 1:30-3:30pm, during which she does puzzles, crafts, color pictures, and "read." She will try every food that I give her, mostly because she is highly motivated by a dessert bribe. She also drinks lots of milk and water.

I am not exactly sure of her measurements, but I weighed her on the scale and she was about 45 pounds*. She is still taller than most of her classmates. She has her check up in a few weeks, so we'll know her height, weight, and percentiles then. She is wearing mostly size 6 clothes, and size 11-12 in shoes.

*Kylie had her well-child appointment on 12/9/15. She weighed 47 pounds (84th percentile) and was 45 inches tall (90th percentile)! She has some good Barlow height genes working! She also had 3 shots, but she took 'em like a champ with only a few tears!

This year,  Kylie was more excited for her birthday than ever before. She has been planning for her big day for months! She woke up to streamers in her doorway, and her favorite breakfast food, cinnamon rolls! She went to school as usual, but because Brooks has his "school" on Thursday, I pulled Kylie out a little early so that we could eat a special lunch together. Obviously, she picked "Pranera!" After lunch, we drove out to the American Girl store so that she could pick out her very own American Girl Doll. She has been asking for over a year for an American Girl. She picked Rebecca, and the doll has not left her side since we got her 4 days ago. That afternoon, she had gymnastics which is one of her favorite things to do, so that worked out well. For dinner, she requested that we go out for cheese pizza. We went to Pies and Pints with Greg and Kaaren for a yummy pizza dinner! We ended the evening with some present opening and face timing with the grandparents! She told me several times that it was "the best day ever!"

Here are some pictures of her special day:

The Big Apple!

Last weekend, we took a whirlwind trip to Philadelphia and New York City to visit some old friends and our old stomping grounds. We flew into Philadelphia on Thursday morning. We at lunch at one of our favs, The Dandelion, walked around Rittenhouse Square and our old apartment, then had dinner at Farm and Fisherman with our friends from residency, Brad and Jen Schoch. Jen found a babysitter for all of the kids, so we were able to enjoy some adult-only time and really catch up with them. If you remember, I used to babysit for their oldest boy, Jacob (or "Ya Ya" as Kylie called him), before Brooks was born. On Friday morning, we were able to get a quick breakfast at Sabrina's with Joe and Catherine Wildenberg who are our friends from college. After breakfast, we caught the train up to NYC!

We arrived in the city on Friday afternoon, and cabbed it up to the Upper East Side to the Camp's. Chris and Erica are good friends from residency who are now in NYC for a fellowship. They have two kids, Annabelle and Bennett, who are almost exactly the same ages as our kids. It was so fun to hear the girls say, "We're best friends forever," and "Let's be sisters." Both Annabelle and Kylie have similar sweet demeanors and really belive the world is all rainbows and butterflies! On Friday evening, we ate dinner at a really great burger joint, but the name has escaped me. After dinner, we walked over to the Plaza Hotel and had dessert as well as a little stroll around the Eloise shop. The girls were in heaven. We actually got to stay with the Camp's in their apartment. It was a like a big sleepover, especially for the kids, who all shared one room! I was so glad we stayed with them because we had our best chats after the kids were asleep. On Saturday, we spent the morning walking around Central Park and down to Midtown, I think. We had NY style pizza for lunch at Angelo's and delicious cupcakes at Magnolia's Bakery for dessert. On the way back to the apartment for our afternoon rest, we walked through Rockefeller Center where the Christmas tree had just been set up and the ice rink was jam packed. Following our rest, we went to dinner at Cilantro's and then spent the evening together chatting and watching college football! Sunday morning, we were back to the airport to fly back to good, ole Columbus! Like I said, it was a whirlwind, but I'm so glad we went!

Flying to Philly.

Eating my first black and white cookie, a New York staple.
It's basically a cross between a cookie and a cake, and it's Ah-mazing!

These two girls had so much fun together!

We joked that they looked like a cute, little family!

Again, Kylie was doing some strange pose that involved keeping her pinky up.

Look at that view!

I think this is how we all felt after walking around the city all day!
Poor Brooks was so tired the whole weekend.
He napped like this on Thursday and Saturday!

Thank you, Chris and Erica, for taking us in and showing us a great time!

Barlow Happenings!

Well, I'm sad to admit that the weather has finally turned colder. When colder weather comes, I take fewer pictures because we are inside more often. We actually did have gorgeous weather up until last week, so I was able to document a few fun adventures. Here is our latest and greatest...

Jon and I have attended most of the Ohio State football games!

Kylie brought LeRoy the Lemon home from school for a night!

We had a fun, but chaotic lunch with friends at our favorite, Harvest Pizzeria!

Kylie loves to color, draw, and write words.
According to her, this is a picture of a horse having an X-ray of his heart!

Brooks has dropped his afternoon nap, so he often falls asleep in the car or stroller.
I love when he puts his arms up like that!

We went to the zoo during one of the warm spells.
This guy was doing the "cheetah run."

We rode the train at the zoo.
L to R: Claire, Kylie, Annie

You can tell from those pink cheeks that it was a warm day!

This girl loves shoes and shopping.
I think she tried on 10 pairs of shoes in the same amount of time that I tried on 3 pairs.
Each was fancier than the last!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween from the Barlow family!

We had another fantastic Halloween! Here are the details...Kylie dressed as Ariel, the Little Mermaid, and demonstrated her "mermaid smile" as you can see from the picture above. Brooksie went as a fierce lion, and despite his small stature, let out many ferocious ROARS! We prepared for Halloween by carving pumpkins a few nights before. Kylie asked for a cat, Brooks wanted a ghost, Jon made a "grandpa," and I carved an owl! Jon cooked the seeds into a delicious snack, and we had a lot of fun metally preparing for trick-or-treating. Columbus has taken it upon itself to change Halloween. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why. We trick-or-treat on the Thursday before Halloween. It's called Beggar's Night! This year, we trick-or-treated around Annie and Claire's neighborhood. We had a ton of kids in our group, probably about 12, and it was so fun to watch them run from house to house. Jon's parents were here for Halloween weekend, so we spent the whole weekend with them, and it was a blast!
